The Yurok Wellness Court
The Yurok Wellness Court is a
composite of Alcohol and Drug Treatment both residential and outpatient, cultural activities and Yurok Language Classes
to integrate the Tribal Member with alcohol and substance abuse issues back into Cultural and Yurok Tribal life. The
Wellness Court's goal is to help Yurok Tribal Members into a crime and drug free lifestyle. The Wellness
Court supports clients in completing probation and parole requirements (appointments with probation and parole oficers) and in
meeting requirements for substance abuse testing. Part of the program is participating
in Yurok cultural and craft activities and Yurok Language classes.
These
activities and classes can include: Regalia making, Yurok Jewelry, Acorn Processing, Traditional Foods, Food
Canning,Traditional Fishing, Traditional Hunting,Bow Construction, Canoe Carving,Net Construction, Language and Instruction
in Cultural Ceremony Protocol.
Wellness
Court clients would petition theYurok Tribal Court for services and would have to submit to the jurisdiction of
the Yurok Tribal Court. Alcohol and substance abuse treatment is available through the Yurok Tribe Wellness
Court with the petition by the Yurok Tribal Member to the Yurok Tribal Court. Case Managers and Community Workers work
with Wellness Court clients to meet the terms and conditions of their probation or parole in order tomaintain
an alcohol/drug and crime free lifestyle.
Yurok Tribal Members on probation or parole are encouraged to contact the Yurok Tribal Court to develop an individual
program through the Yurok Tribe Wellness Court.
